De même « the » se prononce ðə [th(e)] si le mot qui suit commence par une consonne (th(e) cat) et se prononce ði [ th(i)] tout en s’écrivant the si le nom qui suit commence par une voyelle (th(i) animal).
Par ailleurs, on retrouve les mêmes exceptions que pour l’article indéfini : th(e) university teacher et th(e) horror film mais th(i) honest man et th(i) umbrella.
